DUKE UKEM is a three-piece ukulele ensemble playing an eclectic mix of classic through to modern songs. Their three voices cover a wide range of songs and genres. Their repertoire consists mainly of songs not usually associated with the diminutive ‘ukulele’ and are always searching for challenging compositions.
Mick Angeles, a seasoned performer leads the group ably joined by Marg Monahan on bass and Mike Heaton on rhythm. All members can swap instruments and introduce others including guitar, banjo, mandolin and piano.
Some interesting facts about DUKE UKEM are that all three members are Photographers, have names that start with the letter ‘M’ and have four letters in that name … Mick, Marg & Mike. The initials in their band name Duke Ukem, could also be associated with the ‘down’ ‘up’ style of learning rhythm on a ukulele. All three are members of the Brisbane Ukulele Musicians Society Inc, affectionately known as BUMS Inc. which promote the joy of ukulele in the wider community.
Mick, Marg and Mike also perform as part of the NUMBBUMS, one of the regional offshoots of BUMS Inc. that play at many community events as well as multiple performances at SPRUKE, the bi-yearly ‘big bash’ for ukulele players in greater Brisbane and beyond.
DUKE UKEM are now expanding their performances to commercial venues and events.
