Hypnotonics is an energetic quintet that delivers a unique musical experience. Brought together through a shared passion for a little instrument that makes people happy, they augment the ukulele with an array of instruments, including UBass, flute, clarinet, recorders, dulcimer, harmonica, drums, keyboards and glockenspiel — then add three-part harmonies for an intoxicating mix of seventies groove, eighties pop, and contemporary hits, spiced with numbers from the jazz age and later.
First meeting at BUMS jam nights, Amanda Allwood, Cath McCourt, Salli Chmura, Mark Bradshaw and Trish Rodwell discovered they played well together, and had a great time doing it. They have played at ukulele festivals in Brisbane, Blue Mountains, Newcastle, Melbourne, and Neurum Creek. They also enjoy playing at parties, weddings and other functions. They are always on the lookout for songs that you wouldn’t expect to hear played on the ukulele, and instruments you wouldn’t expect to hear played with it.
